Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is a complex eating disorder characterized by the persistent avoidance of certain foods, leading to nutritional deficiencies. ARFID is not motivated by body image concerns and it often co-occurs with Autism and neurodivergence. Children with ARFID may have significant sensory sensitivities, rigid traits, phobias, demand avoidance traits and low interest in foods and fluids, which complicates treatment. Diagnosis is based on nutritional shortfalls rather than weight alone, and effective treatment often requires a highly personalised approach. Awareness of ARFID’s distinction from typical picky eating is crucial for its management.
